VIR Policies

Alcohol – Beer and wine are available for sale at our concession stands. Beer in coolers is permitted for individual consumption. Sale, possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages are governed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Board. VIR requires that all individuals consuming alcohol do so responsibly while maintaining orderly conduct.

Asphalt – Do not pound stakes or make any holes in any asphalt surface. Do not paint any asphalt surface. Offenders will be held liable for all damages and may be ejected. Do not fuel cars on paved areas, except as permitted on pit road during racing competition. Any fuel spills on pit road must be immediately diluted with Cold Fire. If you must temporarily jack a vehicle on asphalt, you must have metal or wood under the jack and jack stands. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Bicycles – Children under 16 are prohibited from riding bikes, roller blades, skates, skateboards and scooters in the paddock during hot track hours. Children may be permitted to ride them at the end of the day if they do so safely. Children may ride them on the Skid Pad if it is not being used during the day.

Camping – Participants wishing to camp at VIR are welcome, provided that camping is an option for the event you wish to attend. You can learn more about our camping options and policies by visiting our Camping Policies page.

Campfires – Campfires/Ground fires are not allowed. Fires must be contained in a portable and self-contained fire pit off the ground. Campers must bring their own firewood; use of VIR Property as firewood is prohibited.

Canopies – Canopies or “EZ-Ups” will not be placed in front of any tent or facility designated as a hospitality area. Additionally, they will not be placed within 50 feet of any fence in a spectator area unless a specific spectator area has been roped off. In this case, the canopy or “EZ-Ups” can be placed anywhere outside of the roped off spectator viewing area.

Cars & Motorcycles – No one under 16 years of age may operate a car or motorcycle anywhere on VIR premises without VIR’s prior written approval. In addition, anyone operating a car or motorcycle must have a valid operator’s license and liability insurance, as required by Virginia law. There may be special exceptions to this rule for licensed racers and the Renter must notify VIR should it seek such an exception.

Charitable Groups – The primary charitable groups VIR works with are: Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House, Boys & Girls Club, First Robotics and Wounded Warrior. If you are a charitable group that would like to propose a charitable event, please call Crista Walker at 434-822-7700 x116 to fill out a Charity Event Application.

Children – Children under 18 years of age must be closely supervised by a responsible adult.

Cook Outs – Individual cooking is allowed on a gas stove or on a grill in the Paddock and at camp sites. Grills and pit cookers cannot be used to feed Participants or friends at an Event.

Course Direction – Course direction at all times is clockwise on the North, South, Full and any combination of Grand Courses. The Patriot course when operated separately may be run in either direction, clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on the group renting the course.

Disposal of Waste Fluid and Environmental Debris – Use of the waste drums is mandatory for used oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and other polluting material. Spillage will not be tolerated and may result in ejection from the facility. Participants must remove all used tires, batteries and unwanted parts. Environmental debris left behind will result in fines to the Renter.

Electricity – VIR Club members and Track Renters get one electrical paddock hookup per event at no charge. Any Participant wanting to use a VIR receptacle for electricity must pay a $25 fee per Event. Participants are issued a specific identification band (Power Band) for the weekend. The band will be secured around the electrical cord end that plugs into the power source. At various times during events, Security Personnel will check for power bands. Those cables without the proper band will be disconnected from the power source. Violators will receive one warning. VIR encourages all participants and Campers to utilize a power generator whenever possible. Additionally if you utilize Paddock space and are using a generator, we request that you park on the outer edges of the grid to allow access for those purchasing electricity.

False Grid and Pavilion – The false grid is reserved for use by Event officials at all times. Its use is for staging cars/motorcycles prior to entry on the track. If a racing vehicle experiences mechanical problems while in the false grid, it must be removed to the paddock area for maintenance. Parking is prohibited in the false grid and the Pavilion (next to the Skid Pad) at all times. Displays set up in the Pavilion that require the use of a vehicle must have the consent of VIR. Absolutely no jacks or jack stands are allowed in either location for staging or displays.

Fences – Fences and areas behind spectator fences are off limits to the public. At no time is anyone authorized to climb a fence or bypass a gate. Anyone who requires an exemption to this must be escorted by VIR Security, Emergency or Maintenance Personnel. During track rentals and Events, photographers are authorized to be inside of specified fences, entering via authorized entry points. At all times inside the fence, photographers will wear their issued vests for identification; failure do so may result in loss of privileges.

Fireworks – Fireworks are prohibited anywhere on the grounds.

Food & Beverage Service/Catering – If you would like to arrange food and beverage service or catering for your event, please contact Teresa King at 434-822-7700 x122. Only individual food service may be self-catered, and any self-catering of corporate events is prohibited unless arranged in advance and a self-catering fee is paid to VIR. Hospitality tents must also be arranged through VIR.

Garages – VIR has18 Pit Road garages on site. Garages include the paddock space for one trailer to park directly in front of the reserved garage. If a garage is an open bay garage, the renter is authorized only the space for a single garage. If they wish to use the additional space and it is not already rented, they can rent the additional space. The hospitality suite above each garage is available for an additional fee. Gate Hours – The main gate is generally open 24 hours. Trailers will not be allowed into the paddock before 5:30 p.m. on the day before your Event.

Hospitality Tents – All Event hospitality tents must be arranged through VIR by contacting Teresa King at 434-822-7700 x122.

Karting – VIR has on-site a 1/20-mile paved banked oval as well as a 5/8-mile paved natural terrain go-kart road course and 9hp go-karts. For information about renting the go-karts for your group, contact Patrick Eagan at 434-822-7700 x350.

Lodging – VIR offers a total of 62 guest rooms featuring: the Lodge (27 Rooms); Paddock Rooms on pit road (18) and The Villas at South Bend (8 two-story Villas). For lodging reservations, call 434-822-7700 x101. RENTERS ARE CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO LIST AND PUBLICIZE VIR LODGING IN ALL EVENT MATERIALS AND WEBSITE / REGISTRATION INFORMATION.

Music – Please be considerate of your neighbors and do not play loud music.

Noise – Unmuffled engines must not be run between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Quiet hour is imposed on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The location and operation of any chassis dynos or similar equipment are subject to track approval.

Off-Road Areas – The off-road areas within VIR (including but not limited to the rally courses behind and next to the go-kart track and trails below the South Paddock) are not authorized for use by Participants without prior written approval of VIR. Spectators are not authorized to use the off road areas at any time. Vehicular traffic on grass around the track will be limited to necessary traffic. Vehicles will not be driven on the grass around the Race Track Proper unless absolutely necessary and will not be parked at corner stations.

Off-Road Vehicle Policy – ATVs, golf carts and other off-road vehicles must be licensed by VIR. Owner’s can purchase a license/permit for a fee of $25 which is valid for the current season. Off-road Vehicle Passes can be purchased at either on-line or at the front entrance gate. Track Renters and VIR Club Members get their first pass at no charge. Only licensed drivers over the age of 16 may operate off road vehicles on VIR property. VIR maintains the right to impound any off road vehicle; they will be returned to the owner at the conclusion of the event. Off-road vehicles must be operated in a safe manner at all times. All off-road vehicles must have lights and scooters must meet the 21-inch seat height requirement.

Paddock Areas – All vehicle maintenance will be performed in the grid areas of the North Paddock or paved area of the South Paddock. Participants are responsible for their spills as outlined in the Disposal section of this policy. Participants will not test vehicles or bed brakes on property roads.

Parking Areas – Vehicle parking at VIR will vary per Event and will be directed by either Event Personnel or by Security Personnel. At all Events, the following parking restrictions apply: North Paddock – No vehicles at any time are allowed to park along the pit road fence or in the road in front of the Pagoda, VIR Store and VIR Pro Shop. All vehicles will be parked within the fire lanes of the paddock on the grids. Infield roads and access gates will remain open and vehicle free at all times to facilitate participant and emergency vehicle movement. South Paddock – Vehicles will park inside of the boundary lines in the paddock or off of the roadway to the rear of the paddock and the gravel/grass area north of the South Paddock towards the water tower. Additionally, vehicles may park on the South side of the Tactical Training Center (TTC) access road to the bleachers. At no time are vehicles allowed to park off of the road in the vicinity of the Oak Tree Turn (#11) on either side of the road. Vehicles are not allowed to stop or stand in the vicinity of the vehicle access bridge to the North Paddock. The Skid Pad generally is used for spectator parking if not previously scheduled for use during an Event. Vehicles parked in violation of this policy will be towed if the owner cannot be located within a reasonable amount of time. Any vehicle that blocks emergency vehicle access or movement will be towed immediately. Personnel who are handicapped and have proper vehicle tags or parking placards can park in designated areas of the North and South Paddock. Participants who require extended parking will complete the form provided by Security, giving credit card information, and will park their vehicles in Raceplex as directed by Security.

Patriot Course – When the Patriot Course is in use in conjunction with the Full Course, vehicles must run clockwise.

Pets – VIR discourages bringing pets to the track. Pets will be allowed if they are leashed and cleaned up behind. Otherwise, VIR will locate the owner and both will be asked to leave. Do not take leashed pets onto False Grid or pit areas. Pets are also not allowed in any of VIR’s buildings or concession areas.

Pit Wall – Painting or writing on pit lane and pit wall is prohibited.

Pit Road – Only Participants and Crew are allowed to enter Pit Road. There are two entrance points in the North Paddock (middle gate and track exit gate). In the South, participants must go over the concrete barrier. Participants are identified by armband or identification card as issued by renter or sanctioning body of a race. Anyone entering the Pit Road area while it is in a hot status must wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and shirts.

Photography – All non-commercial photography is allowed at VIR for Public Events. If there is a Private Test at VIR, all photography rights are suspended unless there is written permission from VIR. Race Circuit Hours – The track is closed to motorized traffic daily from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Restaurant – VIR offers a full service restaurant and bar within our 1840s plantation house. The Oak Tree Tavern is open for dinner 7 days a week starting at 5:30 p.m. Connie’s Pub opens at 5:00 p.m. daily. Reservations are encouraged: 434-822-8605.

Right of Way – Drivers of any non-racing vehicle will yield the right of way to any Race Vehicle at all times on VIR property. Due to the constraints of safety equipment and vehicle design, drivers of racing vehicles may have limited visibility or mobility while operating their vehicle. Operators of racing vehicles must still obey posted speed limits and any other traffic control devices to include Security Personnel.

Shipments – Renter is responsible for shipments to VIR by its Participants.

Showers – The showers are located in the North Paddock main concession building restrooms, at the North Paddock grid barn, just outside the North Paddock entrance, and the South Paddock tech shed. Please be considerate regarding water use and do not waste water in any way.

Smoking – Smoking in any VIR building is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated. Please place all extinguished cigarettes in the receptacles provided. Smoking is not permitted inside the “hot” fence of the track or on pit lane.

Speed Limits – Speed limit in the paddock is 15 mph. Speed limit on access roads is 25 mph. Off-road vehicles are subject to these limits also. All vehicles must stop at the gate house entry point and at any location where Security Personnel are standing in the road to facilitate movement, parking or paddock entry verification. All Security personnel wear a yellow shirt while on duty or a green jacket during periods of inclement weather.

SOVA MOTION LAB AND NATIONAL TIRE RESEARCH CENTER: The full-motion driving simulator, 8-post shaker rig for chassis setup/shock tuning and National Tire Research Center, operated by Virginia Tech, is available in the VIRginia Motorsports Technology Park. Suite Garages – There is no fueling of any kind allowed in the garages. Any fuel stored in the garages will be removed at the owner’s expense. Please use caution using jacks and jack stands to prevent damage to the floor.

Tow Eyes – It is strongly recommended (and required for non street-legal cars) that all vehicles have at least two (2) easily accessible and usable tow eyes on the front and rear of the car. They must not protrude dangerously from the car, and they must be accessible without manipulation of the bodywork or panels. They should be strong enough to support the weight of the car. If no tow eyes are available, the towing crew will hook onto other areas that may cause damage to the car. The towing crew will not be held responsible or liable for that damage. Again, TOW EYES ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Trailer Drops – Trailer Drops – On the day prior to your Event, trailer drops MAY be provided as a courtesy, at the track’s discretion. Trailer drops are typically allowed from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., but there are occasions when this is not possible, due to that day’s track rental. It is the Renter’s responsibility to inform its participants of these restrictions. Participants will not be admitted if they arrive early.

Vendors – Any Track Vendors should contact Crista Walker at least 2 weeks before an Event at 434-822-7700 Ext 116. Food Vendors must contact Teresa King at least 2 weeks prior to an Event at 434-822-7700 Ext 122.

VIR is a private facility and admission to VIR’s property is permitted only with VIR’s consent. General public access is restricted at all times.

VIR reserves the right to ask any person(s) that cannot honor these policies to please excuse themselves from VIR property.
