THIS DESCRIPTION APPLIES TO THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS:
1. Pit Road Leader (Pit Boss)
2. Pit Road Firefighter
3. On-Track Response Firefighter
4. Fire Cart Firefighter

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Responds to fires, medical emergencies, MVC’s and other emergency situations to protect life and
property of participants, team members, and spectators

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Reports to EMS Director, Assistant Director or appropriate Captain (Fire-EMS) as chain of
command dictates
• Fire suppression duties as defined by Orientation, Emergency Action Plan, Standard Operating
Guidelines, and Code 35 Response
• Attend safety meetings, morning meetings, and staff meetings as required
• Operate all emergency vehicles (Rescue Truck, Crash Truck, Broom Truck, Fire Cart)
• Respond to on-track incidents
• Inventory, restock, refuel and minor maintenance of various apparatus and equipment
• Extrication duties
• Mitigation and clean up duties
• Assist EMS as needed
• Assist wrecker/rollback drivers as needed (hook-ups and ramps)
• Assist maintenance crews as needed
• Wash, dry, vacuum and generally clean all equipment and apparatus
• Treat others with respect and accept responsibility for own actions
• Compose written record of activities and procedures
• General housekeeping
• Additional duties as assigned by the EMS Director

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Required to possess state required credentials for firefighters (FF1, EVOC, Haz-Mat Operations,
Extrication, and Motorsports Emergency Response)
• Must be willing to obtain training and certifications required by VIR Fire/Rescue
• Maintain a valid Driver’s License
• May be subject to chemical screen
• Must pass a background check

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
• The ability to stand, sit, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
• Must be able to lift, drag, hoist and carry individuals, equipment and other objects weighing up
to 200 pounds with a partner.
• The ability to work long hours and withstand extreme elements including heat, cold, wind and
rain.
• Wear communication headsets and use portable communication devices
• Wear fire resistive suits, helmets, gloves, and other equipment as required
• Learn towing skills, flat-tows both tow strap and tow rope
• Learn extrication tools and be able to operate under stressful conditions
• Learn Broom Truck to include oil dry applications and broom operations
• Learn Crash Truck usage and assigned equipment
• Learn fire extinguishing agents and proper applications as required
