Summer is prime racing season here at VIR and we’re busier than ever! In the midst of all the fun though, we want to take some time to honor a very important part of VIR’s history. A year ago on July 2nd our beloved Oak Tree fell. We know many of you remember that day like it was yesterday. The outpouring of love and support we received surrounding the tree was unfathomable and we can’t thank you enough.
As we’ve shared before, a tree will be re-planted in its honor outside Oak Tree turn. The new tree will not serve as a replacement, but as a hallowed memorial to the tree that held such a special place in our hearts. In addition, we’re working with the incredible team at the Institute for Advance Learning and Research in Danville to clone the oak tree. Assuming they’re successful, the cloned saplings will be offered to you, our fans, so you can replant them in your own communities and celebrate the iconic tree for years to come. We’ll have more details on purchasing once the viability is confirmed. If you’re interested in large pieces, we’ll also be offering them after the wood has cured. Finally, limited edition key chains featuring a token made from the original tree are available for $10 at the TMI Autotech store or can be shipped for $15.
One of the best ways we know to honor the Oak Tree is by working hard to make VIR the best it can possibly be and that’s exactly what we’re doing. The offseason was a busy one as we underwent severalmajor renovations to update our facilities including repaving the entire full course, widening it in several places and paving the north paddock. We’re already getting rave reviews from drivers who have turned laps and can’t wait to host our two biggest races, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Biscuitville 125 and the newly formed TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, this August.
While the Oak Tree will continue to live on through your memories and in our hearts, we look forward to the many new memories we’ll make as the future is brighter than ever at VIR. We look forward to seeing you this summer!
