Virginia Governor Claims Victory Following Exciting Race Weekend at VIRginia International Raceway

Danville, Virginia – Aug. 25, 2015 – VIRginia International Raceway, one of America’s premier road courses, hosted the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship this past weekend. Based on the VA/NC border, the two neighboring Governors joined in on the competitive spirit.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory decided to place a friendly wager this past weekend on two drivers who call their states home. The battle took place over the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race Saturday afternoon. Gov. McAuliffe had James Clay – who hails from Blacksburg – and the No. 84 BMW to represent Virginia, while Gov. McCrory had selected Matthews, North Carolina-native Tyler Cooke and the No. 81 BMW to represent the Tar Heel State.

Governor McAuliffe won the bet along with bragging rights.

“I congratulate James Clay on his big victory at VIR this past weekend. His driving skills made Virginia proud and helped me win a friendly wager with my friend, Governor McCrory. I look forward to sampling some North Carolina BBQ and pairing it with a few outstanding Virginia craft beers,” said Governor McAuliffe.

This past weekend’s race at VIR featured the TUDOR Championship. Only 12 racetracks in North America host IMSA’s premier series, and the racing activities – featuring a total of 10 races culminating with a two-hour and 40-minute TUDOR Championship race.

VIR is now heading into the 2015 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Biscuitville 125 this Saturday, Aug. 29, which introduces NASCAR fans to the next generation of stars. The day’s supporting series, the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites is a 14-race schedule featuring two classes of single-seat prototype cars racing simultaneously. Tickets are only $10 when purchased in advance and will be an additional $10 at the gate on race day.
