VIRginia International Raceway is pleased to share that longtime professional coach, leading historic racing driver, and VIR Raceplex business owner, Peter Krause, has been voted into the prestigious Road Racing Drivers Club (RRDC).
Krause joins VIR Co-Owner, Connie Nyholm, SascoSports owner and leading historic racing driver, Dave Handy, as the third member voted into the Road Racing Drivers Club from the “VIR family.” Krause is VIR Club member #5. The induction was held at the annual RRDC dinner, immediately preceding the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech 63rd Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway.
“The RRDC is honored to announce the addition of an outstanding group of racing champions and others with remarkable credentials,”
said RRDC president Bobby Rahal. “The new members have demonstrated their expertise and conducted themselves honorably on and off the track and in the boardroom.” Qualities the RRDC members take into consideration when voting in new members.
“We appreciate that each new member has enthusiastically accepted membership in the RRDC. We look forward to working with them as the RRDC continues to pursue its goals of recognizing and mentoring aspiring race-car drivers through a variety of programs.”
Peter Krause began his motorsports career as a mechanic and prep shop owner in Raleigh-Durham in 1981 and was later awarded the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) Professional Mechanic of the Year Award in 1993. His driving career began with autocross and time trials in 1983, later racing with Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA), Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA).
Krause has over four hundred race starts with more than two hundred career class and overall wins including multiple SVRA, HSR Group, and Endurance Class Championships (1990, 1993, 1997, 1998, and 1999) as well as five (2004, 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2014) Sports 2000 Racing Car Club (SRCC) Historic Class Championships.
He received the 1991 BMW Cup at the Lime Rock BMW Vintage Festival, the 1997 Vintage Motorsport Magazine Spirit of Vintage Racing Award, the 2005 Lola Heritage Cup, the 2007 North Carolina Region-SCCA Service Award, and the 2024 Lime Rock HF42 Autodromo Chronograph Spirit of the Event Award for Mid-Century GT and Sports Cars.
Krause started driving on track with the Ferrari Club of America in 1985. Later he debuted as Chief Instructor for NCR-SCCA in 1995 and helped start the BMWCCA Club Racing School program with RRDC members Scott Hughes, Bob van Epps, and Bud Merrill. Krause operated the Track Orientation Program for Legends of Motorsports and served as Chief Instructor for SVRA from 1994-2018.
He has helped build and grow new organizations such as Vintage Racers Group (VRG) and the Vintage Drivers Club of America (VDCA) through positions of leadership, education, and competition.
